Sample lesson plan and quiz
Equivalent Fractions · 40 minutes
A hand-written sample from the Mathematics sample school, shown to illustrate the format. Not official examination material.
Lesson plan: Equivalent fractions (40 minutes)
1. Hook (5 min) Ask: is half a loaf the same as two quarters of the same loaf? Draw both.
2. Explore (10 min) Fold paper strips into halves, quarters and eighths. Students shade 1/2 and find the same amount in quarters and eighths.
3. Teach the rule (10 min) Multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number. Work 2/3 = 4/6 = 6/9 on the board.
4. Simplify (7 min) Divide by a common factor: 12/18 = 2/3 (divide both by 6).
5. Practise and check (8 min) Students do the in-class questions; ask for answers aloud.
